BRITISH RIB RALLY 2010

PLANNING AND FINAL ROUTING GATHERS PACE FOR THE GREAT BRITISH RIB RALLY 2010
11-23 June 2010

The routing and stage planning for the Great British RIB Rally 2010 is now well underway. There are 21 confirmed entries and still several more potential entrants expressing an interest in signing up for this adventure of a lifetime that is being staged over 12 days next June.

The RIBs entered currently range from 11m down to the minimum eligible length of 7.5m. Applications have arrived from all over the UK as well as from mainland Europe and Scandinavia for the 2010 nm clockwise route circumnavigating mainland Great Britain and Ireland. Organisers are also discussing including a new stage comprising a short additional hop from Great Yarmouth over to Boulogne.

Route
There are various routing options still under discussion to ensure that organisers make best use of everyone’s time, their fuel efficiency and to provide the entrants with the very best experience possible. Depending on weather conditions there will also be an alternative route in place.

The Great British RIB Rally 2010 has been conceived by a group of like-minded enthusiasts headed up by Patrick Byrne, the MD at Scorpion RIBs and himself a staunch RIB cruising enthusiast with thousands of miles under his belt. The Rally is set to offer its participants a once in a lifetime adventurous and challenging event and, as Patrick says, “the Great British RIB Rally offers a genuine challenge, around a demanding coastline that will require good seamanship and boat preparation. The timetable is also demanding but we’re planning in plenty of time for exploration and fuel-efficient travel between stopovers.”

Proposed fair weather route (subject to change)

Friday June 11 Arrive at the new Marina in Portland + free overnight berthing
Saturday June 12 Portland to Falmouth with free berthing at Port Falmouth Marina

There will be a Saturday weather review prior to crossing to Ireland and West Coast of Ireland. If all are in agreement:

Sunday 13 June Falmouth to Skull or Baltimore
Monday 14 June Skull to Aran Islands via Kilrush for fuel
Tuesday 15 June Aran Islands to Burtonport
Wednesday 16 June Aranmore to Bangor

Thursday 17 June Bangor to Oban
Friday 18 June Oban to Stornoway
Saturday 19 June Stornoway to Stromness
Sunday 20 June Stromness to Newcastle
Monday 21 June Newcastle to Gr Yarmouth
Tuesday 22 June Gt Yarmouth to Boulogne
Wednesday 23 June Boulogne to Portland

If the weather really kicks off, the alternative route is likely to be:

Sunday 13 June Falmouth to Kinsale
Monday 14 June Kinsale to Wexford
Tuesday 15 June Wexford to Dublin
Wednesday 16 June Dublin to Bangor

The route will then return to the original as mapped out from 17-23 June.

Fuel plans
Diesel is relatively simple to find and where necessary it will be ordered in advance in some ports. To solve the issue of a lack of petrol supply, especially on the West coasts of Ireland and Scotland, the Rally organisers have arranged for a support vehicle to follow the fleet and provide back-up in several ways; a most valuable asset. On the Irish coast there are many ports where petrol is available from local filling stations within a mile or less, and the vehicle will be able to ferry petrol direct to the RIBs.

Hospice update
Although being run as a non-competitive event, one of the opportunities the Rally throws up is for the raising of substantial funds for your nominated charity.

The Rally organisers are encouraging every entrant to raise money for the Hospice movement, and ideally, each boat entering will do so on behalf of a specific Hospice.

So far the hospices being supported include Trinity Hospice, London; Julia’s House Hospice in Poole; Oakhaven Hospice, Lymington; Hope House, Bristol and Avon; and Lewis Manning Hospice, Poole. Any excess funds raised by the Rally from entrance fees or sponsorship will be given to this charity. http//www.helpthehospices.org.uk/get involved/fundraising/

Ideas for fund-raising range from selling space on your hull to relevant companies for strategic placement of logos to encouraging one or two paying passengers to enjoy a leg of the Rally on your boat.

There is no timed element to the event; it simply requires skill, seamanship, observation, recording and an adventurous spirit.

Participants will be rewarded in a number of categories and prizes will include the Scorpion Trophy for the Best Log. Prizes will be awarded at the 2010 BIBOA Annual Dinner in November 2010.

Scorpion RIBs appoints new General Manager

Kevin Hunt has joined the Lymington-based prestige RIB builders Scorpion RIBs Ltd as General Manager. He brings 18 years of practical hands-on as well as managerial experience within the marine industry to this important role with particularly relevant experience gained building Ribeye and Ribtec RIBs as Production Manager at Rampart Yachts, and working with Cougar and Pascoe International.

Kevin is relishing the challenge ahead commenting, “I knew from the very first time that I looked around the Scorpion factory that I needed to be part of Patrick Byrne’s, the new owner’s, exciting plans and help to move the company forward. During this recession most companies are looking behind them and all chasing what work they can find, whereas here we are expanding the current range and also taking very influential orders from around the world.

“The team at Scorpion encompasses skills in all areas of the business from in-house tube manufacturing to design and marketing. It is without doubt the best working environment I have worked in since I was first employed way back in 1990. The attention to detail and the pride that our workforce puts in to each boat is second to none and I can see why our clients old and new keep purchasing our boats.”

Scorpion RIBS at Southampton Boat Show 2009

"Scorpion were there with two of their new 4 model "off the shelf" range - Sport (6.5m, Suzuki 140), Serket (8.5m, twin 200 Verado), Selene (9.75m, Yanmar 315 diesel), Sting (10m cabin RIB, twin Yanmar 315 diesels). With the Sport coming out at a shade under £50k it may be less expensive than previous Scorpions but it's still a pretty hefty entry level!"

Sardinia - Veni, vidi, vici

Costa Smeralda, Sardinia - Playground of the rich and fameous

Scorpion RIBs conquest to Sardinia was a success with double sses. Starting with the Dubois Cup 2009 (bi-anual) and followed by The Loro Piana Superyacht Cup 2009 it was a marathon event with lots of RIB driving around the phantastic and majestic fleet of 100+footers.
The Sting in its element - the Mediterranean Sea - In the background 52 m Ed Dubois sloop Kokomo

The pair, consisting of a brand new Scorpion 10 m Sting (630 hp) and a Scorpion 8.5 m luxury open version twin 175 hp, were VIP and press launches in all weather conditions.
Both users and race participants seemed impressed with performance and comfort of these modern and well built RIBs. The press stayed dry despite some days with more than 30 knots of wind and more than 2 meter swells.

This was however a calm day....for the 8.5 m Scorpion

Scorpion 6.5 m pictures to follow soon

10/03/2009
Scorpion encourages more affordable ribbing with launch of 6.5m at RIBEX 8-10 May 2009

To date Scorpion has always built its RIBs to order. As part of its growth plans however, the company is introducing a limited range of standard boats. The first of these is an updated version of the 6.5 metre, a model that was last produced from the Lymington-based yard in 2001.

According to Patrick Byrne of Scorpion RIBs: “The 6.5m was a very popular boat. We have had many requests for its re–introduction and the originals are in high demand. We are expanding our sales base and introducing a range of products that customers can buy ‘off the shelf’. The 6.5m is a good place to start. This boat is competitively priced and in the past the residual values have held up very well, so it is an ideal Scorpion starter boat …until of course you get drawn into the attractions of long distant ribbing.”

The Scorpion 6.5m, the smallest model in a stunning range that currently stretches from 7.5m up to 10m, brings the delights of owning and running a Scorpion to a wider, but still a highly discerning audience. Scorpion has identified that there is a large enough market out of there of potential customers wishing to buy a Scorpion but perhaps finding it difficult to justify purchasing one of the larger models during a recession.

By producing a smaller, and significantly cheaper production model, Scorpion plans to expand its customer base at a time when some other manufacturers are keeping their heads down. By purchasing a 6.5m Scorpion RIB as opposed to any other marque, the owner immediately climbs onto a higher rung of that aspirational ladder but for a more affordable outlay.

Scorpion is producing two versions of the 6.5m; the Basic model package at £35,325 inc. VAT and a Deluxe model priced at £38,750 inc. VAT.

Included as standard in the basic model/price:

- Famous Scorpion deep-V hull
- 2 x 2-man jockey seats
- New ergonomically designed console which incorporates a forward facing seat
- M84 8”Northstar Chartplotter and VHF Radio
- Suzuki 140hp* 4 cylinder outboard engine
- SeaStar hydraulic system steering
- Five chamber Scorpion made, Hypalon tubes in one colour with rubbing strake, and moulded grab handles
- Lopo Navigation lights
- Underdeck built-in fuel tank +/- 160 litres

*Other engine options available Yamaha 150 and Evinrude 130

The Deluxe model incorporates a different seating plan with twin single jockey seats and an aft bench seat. As usual with a Scorpion there will still be the opportunity of a bespoke version by arrangement.

The Basic and Deluxe 6.5m demo models will both be on show and ready to demonstrate for the first time to the press and public at RIBEX in Cowes, Isle of Wight, between 8-10 May.
Soon to come in a port near YOU! Look at these lovely shots of these magnificent RIBs - best wishes from a nice and sunny day in the Mediterranean (photos: ScorpionRIBs)

Imagine a quiet day out in your RIB...then your son says "dad, i want to fly" - being on the sea its a bit of a silly request....but your only response to this is full throttle and the right wave and "wow we are flying". What a great day out this could be!
